The Heart of StreetWise: Why Our “Army” is About More Than Just Numbers

When you walk into the StreetWise warehouse, the first thing you notice is the motion. Boxes of fresh produce are being sorted, racks of clothing in Cedar’s Closet are being organized, and clients being meeting with our Advisors.

But if you look closer, the true “heartbeat” isn’t the movement of the boxes. It’s the conversations happening over them.

April is National Volunteer Month, and as we observe National Volunteer Week (April 19–25), we want to share the incredible “math” that makes our mission possible.

The Math of the Mission: 6 Staff vs. 750 Volunteers

At StreetWise, we operate with a dedicated staff of just six people. Yet, every month, we serve thousands of families and distribute over a million pounds of food a year. How is that possible?

It’s the math of the “Army of Volunteers.”

  • 30 to 50 Volunteers: The number of people needed every single day to keep our weekday distributions running smoothly.
  • 750 Volunteers: The average number of individuals who step up every month to serve Gwinnett County and surrounding areas through StreetWise.
  • 39,000+ Hours: The staggering amount of time our volunteers gave last year to ensure no neighbor goes hungry.

Without you, the math simply doesn’t add up. But while the numbers are impressive, they aren’t the reason we do what we do.

Relationships Over Resources

At StreetWise, we often say we aren’t in the “food business,” we are in the hope business.

If you ask our Greeters, they’ll tell you their most important job isn’t checking someone in on a clipboard; it’s being the first warm smile a nervous guest sees. It’s the “Welcome, we’re so glad you’re here,” that begins to break down the walls of crisis.

If you ask our Client Advisors, they’ll tell you their role isn’t just about “mapping a road” to self-sufficiency. It’s about sitting across from a mother or father, hearing their story, and offering a prayer. It’s about building a relationship that says, “You are seen, you are valued, and you are not alone.”

Join the Army: We Need Your Hands (and Hearts)

As we look toward the rest of 2026, our goal is to “speed up” to meet the growing needs of our community. To do that, we need more “soldiers” in our Army of Volunteers, specifically during our weekday distributions.

We have an immediate need for:

  • Weekday Greeters: Be the face of hope from 9:15 AM – 2:00 PM.
  • Client Advisors: Help families navigate their path to stability.
  • Truck Drivers: Help us keep the “water” flowing to those in crisis.

Whether you can give four hours a month or four hours a week, you are the bridge between a family’s struggle and their success.
