Impact Award Finalist
Although StreetWise Georgia did not win the 2019 IMPACT Awards, we were honored enough to be a Finalist! I have to say that the Gwinnett County Chamber of Commerce does an outstanding job of recognizing the best of the best of leading organizations making a difference in our community. I was pleasantly surprised that out of the many business finalists that the Nonprofit category had the most finalists.
The awards ceremony was held at the Infinite Energy Forum hosted by the Gwinnett Chamber and catered by Proof of the Pudding. And since I like food and good company, which you are surrounded by great people from many different businesses, it was a win win. Being invited to attend the Awards Ceremony is not only an accolade celebrating all our hard work, it is an enjoyable experience to mingle and get to know all the other honorees and how their contributions are making our community better. It also gave Terry Powell, President of StreetWise Georgia, and me an opportunity to build new relationships and partners. To help ‘break the ice’ there were convenient selfie sticks for groups to share the ceremony experience with others. And I have to say we had a fun group at our table!
The Nonprofit Award Finalist was Street Grace. An Atlanta-based, faith-driven organization collaborating with faith, business and community leaders providing a path to end Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking (DMST) in Metro Atlanta and throughout the United States. I am very happy they won as they are a well-deserved organization making an impact and a difference in the world.
My takeaway from this very honoring event, is my continued appreciation for the work so many people do to make a difference. I have been working or participating in the nonprofit capacity in some form or fashion for over 30 years all because of my parents, Terry and Pat Powell. I have to say, I gain a new appreciation for my parent’s passion to helping those in need and starting StreetWise Georgia whenever I attend an event celebrating what we do at StreetWise. To this day, 31 years later, my parents are still as passionate as they were when they began their mission and stepped out in faith, simultaneously left their corporate positions and devoted their lives to serving families living in low income areas. And, of course, the best part of the event was I got to spend the day sharing this honor with my Dad.
